Bagan

Bagan is an ancient city located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. The city is situated on the east bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River and approximately 145 km southwest of Mandalay. Bagan’s name in Pali language is Arimaddana-pura , meaning "the City that Tramples on Enemies". From the 9th to 13th Centuries, the city was the capital of the Empire of Pagan, the first Burmese empire to unify city states and regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. Over two hundred and fifty years of rule, Bagan successfully laid the foundation for the ascent of Burmese language and culture, the spread of Burmese ethnicity in Upper Myanmar, and the growth of Theravada Buddhism in Myanmar and in mainland Southeast Asia. During the Empire's golden age between the 11th and 13th Centuries, over 10,000 Buddhist pagodas, temples and monasteries were constructed in Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2,200 temples and pagodas survive the test of time to the present day.
