Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, also known as Golden Rock) is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Myanmar. Kyaiktiyo in Mon language means “Pagoda on a hermit’s head”. It is a small pagoda of 7.3 metres height, consecrated on the top of a big balancing boulder covered with gold leaves pasted on by devotees. The pagoda is enshrined with a strand of Buddha’s hair. It is this strand of hair that, according to the legend, prevents the rock from tumbling down the mountain. The rock and the pagoda are at the top of Mount Kyaiktiyo. A glimpse of the gravity defying Golden Rock is enough of an inspiration for any person to turn to Buddhism. Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is located at a distance of 130 miles from Yangon.
